In fluid piping systems including oil & gas, chemical processing, seawater desalination, water treatment, food & pharmaceutical industries, stainless steel flanges act as critical components to guarantee pipeline sealing and detachable connections. Improper selection will directly lead to leakage, rusting and pressure failure, resulting in project shutdown and safety risks.
As a stainless steel flange and pipe fitting manufacturer with 16 years of production experience, XX Metal summarizes this practical selection guide based on thousands of overseas project supply cases, assisting procurement managers and engineers to select suitable products accurately.
Most forged stainless steel flanges follow ASTM A182 standard. Different grades fit distinct environments:
304 / 304L (F304/F304L)
304 offers basic corrosion resistance for municipal water supply, general equipment and normal-temperature weakly corrosive environments. 304L with low carbon content resists intergranular corrosion and suits welding processes. Not recommended for long-term service in seawater or salt spray environments with chloride ions.
316 / 316L (F316/F316L)
Molybdenum element greatly improves resistance to chloride corrosion, making it the first choice for seawater, chemical acid & alkali and coastal projects. The low-carbon property of 316L eliminates heat treatment after welding, widely adopted in offshore engineering and water treatment projects.
Special Grades: 321, 904L, Duplex 2205/2507
321 applies to high-temperature pipelines; 904L and duplex steel serve harsh highly corrosive, high-chloride working conditions. XX Metal supports customized forging of all special stainless steel flanges.
Important purchasing reminder: Many suppliers use 201 non-standard material to replace 304. Reliable manufacturers must provide original Mill Test Certificate (MTC) and support third-party spectrum inspection.
Weld Neck Flange (WN)
Tapered hub ensures smooth stress transition with maximum pressure resistance. Suitable for high temperature, high pressure and flammable medium such as refineries, power plants and main oil & gas pipelines. Sealing face options: Raised Face (RF), Ring Type Joint (RTJ).
Slip On Flange (SO)
Easy installation with moderate cost for medium & low pressure normal-temperature pipelines, widely used in water treatment and general machinery. Pressure resistance is lower than weld neck flange.
Socket Weld Flange (SW)
Mainly used for small-bore pipelines under DN50 and instrument tubing under high pressure.
Blind Flange (BL)
Seals pipeline ends for pressure testing, reserved interfaces and pipeline blocking, essential for future project expansion.
Lap Joint Flange (LJ)
Matched with stub end. The flange body can rotate freely to align bolt holes easily during installation, ideal for long-distance pipelines and frequently disassembled systems.
Threaded Flange (TH)
No welding required for low-pressure small-bore instrument pipelines. Not allowed for high temperature & high pressure working conditions.
Four widely adopted international standards, dimensions cannot be interchanged. Please confirm before inquiry:
ASME B16.5 (ANSI): Class150/300/600/900/1500/2500, popular in North America, Middle East and Southeast Asia
EN 1092-1: PN6/PN16/PN25/PN40 for European Union market
DIN 2501: Traditional standard for European legacy projects
GB/T 9113: Domestic projects and some Southeast Asian projects
Sealing face types: RF (Raised Face) most common; FF (Flat Face) mainly for non-metal gaskets; RTJ for high pressure & high temperature service.
Confirm nominal pipe size NPS/DN and pipe schedule
Clarify working pressure, temperature and conveyed medium (chloride ion, acid & alkali concentration)
Select flange type and material grade
Define standard, pressure class, sealing face type
Confirm surface finish (pickling, polishing), MTC requirement and export packaging for bulk orders
We operate stainless steel flange forging lines with 16 years of experience, manufacturing full-size standard flanges from 1/2" to 60". Custom non-standard flanges with drilled holes and special shapes are available.
All products are forged instead of plate fabricated. Hydrostatic test and non-destructive testing can be arranged. We supply EN10204 3.1 certification and export products to more than 50 countries worldwide.
